Range

Really enjoyed this Black on the Air podcast with Larry Wilmore speaking to David Epstein, a sports journalist, about his new book Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World. In studying “the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters, and scientists”, he believes that these people “succeed not despite the fact but because they find their way to that particular field after pursuing other endeavors first.” https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2019/05/david-epstein-range/590704/

Basically, he debunks Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hours’ and single-focus rule for success/mastery.

How I heard about this book was through my son in a marketing session. I spoke about a long-held belief that I was a jack of all trades and master of none and expounded on judgement of and frustration with myself in thinking this was not good, something was wrong with me and that I would not attain fulfillment and success. I mentioned my negative views completely changed 7 years ago after receiving a note from a successful businessman who attended a party in my home thanking me and citing the wonderful creative balls that I juggle. As the party was super, for starters, he referenced my interior design, plethora of art, and piano improvisation. I forever bless him for letting me know he was inspired and for being so aesthetically attuned.

My son smiled and responded, asking me if I was aware that the “jack of all trades” quote that is promoted is incomplete, and that there is a final sentence which corroborates what Epstein writes in his book. All these years I had no idea! Here it is: “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”

Societal Issues

We have the capacity and resources to truly fix each and every one of the biggies. That’s the good news! Sadly, however, the Republicans at the helm have little to no interest in solving anything let alone elevating mankind. In addition, lacking in any moral compass, they are purchased by companies focused on profit over people and the planet. Meaning, their allegiance is to those companies. Combining the fact that they continue to support and allow a man to be in the oval office who is clearly compromised in every way shape and form and a sociopath, we have a situation that is unconscionable and dangerous.

In my opinion, they are all traitors. Most likely they will not change so We The People must mobilize, rise up, speak out, vote, and demand the necessary changes for the greater good of all. Otherwise, I shudder at the thought of what will happen to this country.

I still have faith and hope that goodness will prevail.

Astrological Reading

Back in 2016, right after the election results I was speaking to my astrologer extraordinaire who is always spot on with information. I mentioned the people would have to take to the streets. His response was an emphatic “NO, we have to hold the light!” I remember feeling a bit taken back and that perhaps I said something wrong. (Good girl in action?) Anyway, my assessment was correct as, subsequently, many people, women, scientists, students, etc., have marched in protest of the direction of this county.

We can hold the light and fill the streets if necessary. One does not preclude the other. I question whether simply “holding the light” will deter the current swift slide into fascism.

Our Nation

On 60 Minutes Nancy Pelosi stated she did not think our nation would survive another 4 years of this presidency. Actually, at this point, I question whether this country can survive 15 more months of a campaign saturated with political and racist rhetoric and the fallout. I have to add the Senate Majority Leader into this time table too, the man who single-handedly blocks any and all legislation that supports our safety, health and well-being. A few weeks ago, he got the nickname Moscow Mitch. Now, is Massacre Mitch appropriate?

System Of Patriarchy

I think Elizabeth Warren took the lead in Tuesday night’s debate. With her brilliant mind and fiery personality, she conveyed excitement for change and a sense of hope. At the moment, I believe she’s got the power to mobilize. Though, to be continued.

On point, here’s a new piece. On the 24”x24” square canvas, symbolizing a small box, I superimposed red and writing on the faces of male and female politicians and topped it off with the power of pink.

Oops 24 - Debate

This piece came forth last night as I listened to the debates. My mood quickly changed from equanimity to angst. For starters, the duel between Kamala and Joe was ridiculous, her prosecutorial approach tiring, and his insensibility inciteful in continually referring to Obamacare rather than what it is, The Affordable Care Act. With rampant racism finally on full display, front row and center, why feed more animosity? Hasn’t he noticed the systematic use of the machete to carve away everything positive that Obama accomplished? Since the Republicans are masters of spinning via misrepresentation and repetition, why not consistently spin accuracy, Democrats? Bless each and every candidate for stepping forward to take the lead; however, just not sure who in the group can get the job done.

Epiphany

I’ve taken vocal training from the same coach for 36 years. She just retired, and so I’m feeling a bit of a void, to say the least. She has taught me so much about singing, has been a pillar of strength, support and inspiration during my most challenging times, and has invoked years of musical joy.

My final lesson last week was essentially an exit interview wherein she provided observations, compliments and recommendations. At one point, she stated that she held great admiration for me in witnessing how incredibly hard I have worked over the years in releasing my voice, including my art.

Bingo! What this has all been about day after day year after year is the “releasing” of my voice rather than the “finding” of it. Wow, just a change of one word can have a huge impact in offering awareness, clarification and direction. Certainly important to keep in mind in the present moment and going forward.

My Art

Last week at the Commonwealth Club I heard Dr. Cornel West speak. Without a doubt, he’s an entertaining, provocative, democratic intellectual.

Periodically he referenced his love for artists/musicians. At one point he said, “If they are not stirring your soul, they are not preparing you for struggle.” It would have been cool had he expounded on this, especially the last part.

Regardless, struggles with matters of the heart and the human experience have provided impetus for my creativity and desire to transform them into beauty. I do hope my fiery art provides inspiration to persist no matter what. The title of this is “Heavy Cascade.”
