Pink - Emergence Continued

During the February 2019 Grammy’s, Alicia Keys introduced Janelle Monae and said, “She’s got the world looking at pink the way we should.” Pink was a primary color in the presentation of her song, “The Way You Make Me Feel.”

“It’s a celebratory song,” Monae explained to The Guardian. I hope that comes across. That people feel more free, no matter where they are in their lives, that they feel celebrated. Because I’m about women’s empowerment. I’m about agency. I’m about being in control of your narrative and your body. For a large part of my life, I shied away from this color. Immersing myself in art making starting in pivotal 2010, it emerged and persisted. Embracing pink as a symbol for femininity and self-love reinforced my driving force that I matter and to stay steadfast on my course of autonomy.

Memorial Day

To diverge for a moment, last night I watched the 60 Minutes’ memorial segments. Ooh, men suffer injustices too!

Anyway, today I honor all the people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. I include my beloved father who, while in the Army, contracted rheumatic fever that began with a strep throat. Obviously, it affected the connective tissue in his heart as he died from a massive heart attack at a young age.

It remains abundantly clear that the subject matter of my art thus far, especially the pink series, is more relevant than ever. Pink Duct Tape 1 & 2, Be A Good Girl Unbridled 1 & 2, Thwarted Truth 1 & 2, SHH 1, 2 & 3, Shackles, How Did A Sensitive Boy Become A Hardened, Cold, Disconnected Man, I Have Something To Say, etc., etc., etc.!

It “Just is” that I feel like screaming! The rigged plan by ultraconservative, sexist, mostly white men, (and supported by some women), to overturn Roe vs. Wade, to criminalize abortion and throw women and practitioners in prison for an ungodly amount of years is abominable. I will start listening to my opponents when there are no longer 400,000 babies, toddlers and adolescents in our foster system, an overburdened, inadequate system that essentially grooms these beings for cycles of heartbreak and terrible lives. Add to this statistic that 1 in 8 children in the United States Of America are abused and, well, there are way too many unwanted children born. (Stats per the recent documentary, “Foster.”)

This breaks my heart but, obviously, not those opposed to abortion. And, it infuriates me that women are still the most oppressed group of human beings on this planet! Is the US any different than the Middle East and other countries where women are subjugated? Fundamentally, no in my opinion.

Unrequited

No question I have felt this a lot concerning x, d proceedings/unjust legal system and the shenanigans of female siblings and nephews. I remain aware and accept my feeling as “Just is.”

A recent a-ha moment, on the heels of the powerful “Just is” revelation, is that there would be something wrong with me if I was not embodied with a strong desire to feel requited; however, the clincher is I am the one who is responsible for feeling requited, that every shocking, oppressive tactic/behavior I’ve experienced during key relationships has ultimately been to break me out of my complacency and open me up to another part of myself that is a lot freer and a lot more authentic and really gets going. It is I who is accountable. I now get it!

My energy is positively shifting, and I am moving into a new way of being. Not surprising, my creative impulses are dramatically gaining momentum as well.
