Pink - Emergence Continued

During the February 2019 Grammy’s, Alicia Keys introduced Janelle Monae and said, “She’s got the world looking at pink the way we should.” Pink was a primary color in the presentation of her song, “The Way You Make Me Feel.”

“It’s a celebratory song,” Monae explained to The Guardian. I hope that comes across. That people feel more free, no matter where they are in their lives, that they feel celebrated. Because I’m about women’s empowerment. I’m about agency. I’m about being in control of your narrative and your body. That was personal for me to even talk about: to let people know you don’t own or control me and you will not use my image to defame or denounce other women.” Songfacts.com

For a large part of my life, I shied away from this color. Immersing myself in art making starting in pivotal 2010, it emerged and persisted. Embracing pink as a symbol for femininity and self-love reinforced my driving force that I matter and to stay steadfast on my course of autonomy.
